Chapter 16

When the door opened, the alarm system beeped, making her flinch as she entered the chill of the air conditioning from the stifling late June heat. It’d been five days since they’d installed that stupid alarm. You’d think she’d have become used to it by now. She dropped her keys on the table in the foyer and walked through to the living room, the scent of something amazing making her mouth water.

What was she doing? This was absolute craziness! Who let a man they were attracted to live with them for an unknown amount of time for protection? And what man would do it without a commitment of some sort? While no one could say she and William behaved like an old married couple, they weren’t able to avoid each other in the same house. Yes, the former Bennet homestead was large, but they had to share a kitchen and laundry room. Neither had their own private wing.

Her stomach growled, and she looked down. “Traitor.” The man cooked every night, and not simple Rachel Ray 30-Minute Meals, but real food: burgers and fries, salmon, spinach pasta. He’d even made a dish with tofu—and she’d loved it.

Food aside, she couldn’t continue to live like this. She’d called her father today, who’d laid out the most manipulative guilt trip she’d heard in years, and she’d relented. Moving into her parents’ house was out of the question, which was her only option if she booted her easy on the eyes roommate, at least until Wickham was caught. So, she was stuck with the whiskey-colored gaze and drool-worthy body of William Darcy for the duration. She was doomed.

At a chirrup, she looked down to Evie who sat primly in front of her. “I suppose you want your dinner.” The petite cat needed no further invitation and trotted toward the kitchen. When they entered, she all but groaned at the sight before her. Who said he could cook without a shirt on? His back was to her, and he was wearing an apron and a pair of cargo shorts that were slung low on his waist. Dear Lord, if he turned around without the apron, would his happy trail be showing? If she could’ve, she would’ve slapped herself.

“You’re early,” he said smiling over his shoulder.

“My last appointment cancelled, and Chase was fine finishing up on his own.” Her eyes devoured the muscles of his shoulders and trailed to his defined biceps. She’d never seen him work out, but he had to with his toned physique.

He turned and started when he caught her staring. Crap! “Oh, sorry. I went to the gym this afternoon, and couldn’t cool off after my shower.” He untied the apron and tossed it over the counter while he reached for his t-shirt. Holy hotness, Batman! The man had a six-pack and a toned body she had only imagined, and sure enough, that trail of hair she’d questioned was right there and disappeared beneath the button of his shorts in an unspoken invitation for her tongue to…to.
